Where Does the Money Go?
State law in Montana requires that at least 45 percent of the money raised from ticket sales goes back to players in prizes. The remaining revenue is used to pay retailer commissions and cover the costs of operating games, but also helps to benefit the state in a number of ways.
Transfers are made to the General Fund every quarter to help support public education, safety and health programs. A portion of the revenue also goes towards providing scholarships for college and university students studying science, technology, engineering, math and healthcare (STEM) subjects. Ticket sales from Lotto America and other games have helped the Montana Lottery raise more than $300 million for the state since 1986.
