Lotto America in Tennessee
Tennessee is a great place to play Lotto America, as you don’t have to pay state tax and you can also take part in the extra Quick Cash game for the chance to win instant prizes when you are buying your ticket. Tennessee has been one of the most successful states for big winners since the revival of Lotto America.
How to Play in Tennessee
The main Lotto America game is played the same way in Tennessee as it is in the rest of the participating states. Select five main numbers from 1 to 52 and a Star Ball between 1 and 10. If you don’t want to choose your own, you can mark the ‘QP’ box on your playslip to indicate that you would like a Quick Pick, and a random set of numbers will be generated for you.
Mark ‘Yes’ next to the All Star Bonus box and any non-jackpot winnings you receive will be multiplied by up to five times their starting value. The following rules also apply which may differ to other states:
- You can enter your numbers in up to 10 consecutive drawings
- The minimum age to purchase a ticket or win a prize is 18
- Tickets can be purchased up until 9 p.m. CT on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, ahead of the drawings at 9:15 p.m. CT / 10:15 p.m. ET
How to Play Lotto America Quick Cash
The Tennessee Lottery also offers an additional game, Quick Cash, alongside Lotto America. This is only available in the Volunteer State and it’s so simple to play. You can’t take part in Quick Cash by itself though, you need to play Lotto America.
All you need to do is mark the Quick Cash option on your playslip. The cost is an extra $1 per play. A series of Quick Cash numbers will be printed on your ticket, alongside a prize value.
If any of the Quick Cash numbers match the Lotto America numbers you are playing, you instantly win the corresponding prize amount. You can claim it there and there without having to wait for the Lotto America draw.
One of the numbers will be the Quick Cash Star Ball. This is only a winner if it matches the Lotto America Star Ball on your ticket. The available prizes in Quick Cash range from $2 to $500.
Claiming Prizes in Tennessee
When you claim a prize in Tennessee, here are some of the key rules you should be aware of:
- The claim period for prizes is 180 days from the date of a drawing, once this deadline has passed, your ticket will no longer be valid and you will not be able to receive your winnings
- There is no state tax on lottery winnings in Tennessee
- You cannot stay anonymous if you win. The name and home town of winners is deemed to be public information
The method for claiming prizes depends on the value of your win. The procedure for different amounts is outlined below:
Prizes under $600 - Prizes can be claimed from any licensed retailer, from a district office or by mail.
Prizes of $600 to $199,999 – You must provide valid ID (such as your driver’s license or passport) for any prize of $600 or more, to verify your name, address and Social Security number. You can claim prizes up to $199,999 by mail or by going to one of the Tennessee Lottery’s district offices. The addresses of the offices are shown below:
Area | Address |
---|---|
East | 9298 Kingston Pike Knoxville, TN 37922 |
Southeast | 2020 Gunbarrel Rd. Suite 106 Chattanooga, TN 37421 |
Middle | 26 Century Blvd. Nashville, TN 37214 |
West | Chiles Plaza 7424 U.S. Highway 64 Suite 104 Memphis, TN 38133 |
Prizes of $200,000 and over – You must claim your prize from the Tennessee Lottery headquarters at 26 Century Boulevard, Nashville TN 37214. You will need to produce your winning ticket and a valid ID.
Claiming prizes by mail – You can claim prizes of up to $199,999 by mailing your ticket to the Tennessee Education Lottery, P.O. Box 290636, Nashville, TN 37229-0636. You will need to send a completed claim form for prizes over $600 and you should also sign the back of your ticket.
Claiming prizes as a lottery pool – The Tennessee Lottery will only issue one check for any prize won, but this can be paid to an individual, organization, partnership, trust or estate. If you have played as a pool, you must complete an IRS Form 5754 at the time you are claiming your prize. Everyone in the group will need to have their identification verified so the tax liabilities can then be correctly divided between you.
Tennessee Winners
Tennessee’s first jackpot win in the new Lotto America format came on April 1st 2020 and was worth $9 million. Rodney Young came forward to claim the prize, having purchased his ticket from Blue Wing Market, 5716 McMinnville Hwy. in Woodbury.
It’s not just the players who are winners in Tennessee, though. The Tennessee Education Lottery was set up to support students in the Volunteer State and has raised more than $6.5 billion for education programs since 2003. Just over a quarter of all the revenue from games such as Lotto America is given to education. Among the funded programs have been the HOPE Scholarship scheme, Wilder-Naifeh grants and the Governor’s Drive to 55 initiatives.
